在西環高低起伏的街道之間，藏着一種令人難忘的日常節奏：撐上長命斜時的「慢」、順着下坡而行的「快」、跨過梯級時的「跳」、轉入街角小巷時的「轉」。一步一坡、一街一巷——在西環的日常變奏之間，潛藏着歷史的層層軌道。
沿着斜坡往上走，也像是沿着時間回溯。自十九世紀起，人們依山闢地，築起一層又一層的平台，讓各行各業在此落地生根。這片位處城市最西端的海岸，曾經承載不同年代的公共設施、平民生活與風月痕跡。時至今日，舊店與新舖、舊日常與新風景，在街道上交錯並置。
四位藝術家以四段時間切片，回望西環的過去，也觀察今日的日常。他們透過深入的訪問與調研，穿梭於不同的時代記憶之間：「紮合」呈現紮作工藝在當代的轉化，林兆榮追尋塘西風月的餘音，孫禮賢探察歷史建築的今昔變遷，嚴瑞芳則重塑街坊的聲音記憶。
「西環變奏」展開一份開放的樂譜，記錄社區複合的節奏、路徑與故事，並邀請大家一同參與奏鳴。除了四組主要藝術作品，一系列導賞團、工作坊及放映活動，以及十份散落於西營盤、石塘咀與堅尼地城的「事件譜」，亦將帶領大家一同漫步西環，細聽這首由時間與生活共同譜寫的歷史變奏。
Between the undulating streets of Sai Wan lies a memorable everyday rhythm: the “slowness” of climbing a long incline, the “quickness” of moving downhill, the “skip” across staircases, and the “turn” into a side alley. With every step, every slope, every street and every lane, layers of history are hidden within Sai Wan’s everyday variations.
To walk uphill is also to trace time in reverse. Since the 19th century, people have carved terraces into the hillside, creating layer upon layer of ground on which different trades and communities could take root. Situated on the western edge of the city’s coastline, this area has, across different periods, borne the traces of public facilities, everyday working-class life and entertainment culture. Today, old shops and new businesses, old routines and new scenery stand side by side along its streets.
Through four slices of time, four artists look back on Sai Wan’s past while observing its everyday present. Through interviews and research, they move between memories from different eras: “Zaat Hap” presents the contemporary transformation of traditional bamboo craft; Swing Lam traces the lingering echoes of Shek Tong Tsui’s entertainment past; Larry Shuen explores the past and present transformations of historic buildings; and Yim Sui-fong reconstructs the sound memories of the neighbourhood.
“Re/composing Sai Wan” unfolds an open score that records the community’s layered rhythms, routes and stories, and invites everyone to join in its sounding. In addition to the four main artworks, a series of guided tours, workshops and screenings, together with ten “Event Scores” scattered across Sai Ying Pun, Shek Tong Tsui and Kennedy Town, will lead audiences on a walk through Sai Wan and invite them to listen closely to this historical variation composed by time and everyday life.
